Ashraf Aly Hassan, Ph.D., P.E., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at United Arab Emirates University, where he also serves as Coordinator of the Environmental Engineering Program. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 2010 and has since held academic, research and professional positions in the United States and the UAE. His research focuses on “green” biodesalination using algae, sustainable wastewater treatment with extremophilic microorganisms, biohydrogen production, fate and transport of nanoparticles, and biological treatment of air and gas-phase pollutants. Dr. Hassan has led or co-led numerous externally and internally funded projects, authored many peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and supervised several MSc and PhD students. He is active in international conferences, editorial boards and professional societies.
