Biography
Professor Muhammad Wakil Shahzad is the Chair in Advanced Energy & Sustainability at Northumbria University, a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellow, and Founder & CEO of EcoTechX — a deep-tech spinout commercialising next-generation desalination and water-from-air technologies. With over 15 years of experience across academia, industry, and government, his work focuses on delivering real-world solutions to global challenges in water circular economy, and energy systems integration.
He has led and contributed to more than £10M in competitive research funding, including the £2.8M UKRI Ayrton Challenge project and FCDO Re-inventing Textile Water Circular Economy. Through EcoTechX, he has translated university research into deployable technologies for industry and off-grid communities, with live pilots in the UK, Pakistan and Africa to enable ultra-low-energy solar-powered atmospheric water generation, delivering scalable solutions for climate resilience.
